But, are you sure you cannot accomplish this using filters?

Add a calculation field with the function "FormatDateTime(now()) "
You can just type it in. The function "now()" requires no parameters.
Each time you open the record for editing, whether or not you make changes, the field contents will be changed to the current date and time.
Choose how you want this displayed - if you want it as a status displayed in list view I recommend choosing string.
